Dance Therapy

I have been dancing since the age of 2 years old. It’s always been in my blood and my deepest passion. It’s the one thing I never got bored of; I always wanted to be at the studio! As I got older, I had the opportunity to teach classes alongside being a student and that was the greatest experience. Gaining the opportunity to show young kids what I had loved so much for so long of my life, getting to see the happiness in their little faces as they danced around the room. With dance being such a large aspect of my life I decided to challenge myself and volunteer to assistant teach in a dance class for special ed students. I never would have guessed that dance could be a sense of therapy, a form of self-expression for kids that struggle to express themselves, and a safe place for them to get away from any bad energy that they experience in their day to day lives.

Dance therapy isn’t commonly known throughout the world. When somebody thinks of a dancer, you think of intense work, hard on your body and beautiful grace, but for these young kids, dance was a place they could let go, stretch their body, gain both mental and physical strength and just have fun. Knowing that I could help fix the problem that these kids never were able to feel “normal” in their everyday lives to a point where they are smiling because they get to finally express themselves, is the most incredible feeling. Dance therapy not only helps break the societal mental dilemmas of these kids, but also can help them gain confidence in their image, in their bodies, and throughout life. Being able to assist in these classes and see the progress of these kids was the greatest experience I could have ever asked for.
